I've always been interested in reading the DUNE novels ever since my uncle took me to watch the 80s film. I enjoyed it enough to keep my interest going. I never got around to reading any of the novels. I watched both miniseries that the Sci-Fi Channel did and enjoyed them also. I took my 15-year-old son to see the new movie that was recently released, and we both thought it was awesome!
I made sure to read the novel before seeing the new film. I think the film does a fine job of adapting the story, but the novel is amazing! I see why it is brought up in discussions of the greatest science fiction of all time. Herbert's prose and storytelling are enthralling. I decided to continue on with the series and I have completed DUNE MESSIAH and CHILDREN OF DUNE so far. I am currently reading GOD EMPEROR OF DUNE and I'm enjoying it. I have no reason NOT to continue with the series yet.
These books have me wrapping them up and putting them in my lunchbox to read on break and lunch at work. I plan on finishing the original 6 books and then I'm going to try the concluding two books, HUNTERS OF DUNE and SANDWORMS OF DUNE, written by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert. If those two hold up, then I'll most likely try out some of the prequel novels. I have read THE ROAD TO DUNE as well. The highlight of this book for me was the inclusion of the "alternate take" on DUNE known as SPICE WORLD. It's familiar but different. Some of the characters act differently and some of them aren't even in it if I recall correctly. Regardless of how any of the other books hold up from this point on out, I am going to buy the new hardcover version to make sure I have a nice, intact copy for my collection because I will be reading DUNE again in the future.
