Initiative
I just have each side roll 1d20. The winning side acts first. As an alternate, I allow alternating actions where the two sides alternate actions within the same phase. So the Melee Phase for a battle between four Characters (Side A), versus 4 Orcs (Side B) would look like this if the characters won initiative.
