Lower-level Magic Users are pretty lame. They pretty much cast a spell, and then the player can go home. To address this, the BE+ rules allow Clerics, Magic Users, and Elves use Mana to cast spells. Mana is basically the magical energy that “powers” spells. MANA (+ WIS BONUS) PER LEVEL ► CLERIC: 1d2 ► MAGIC USER: 1d4 ► ELF: 1d2
Spells cost their level in mana pts to cast, so a level 2 spell would cost 2 Mana Points to use. Thus, a 3rd level Magic User would have an average of 6 Mana, and could cast 6 level 1, or 3 level 2 (etc…) spells per day.
Mana recovers at a rate of: ► 1 MP (+WIS adj) per XP Level/night of rest

Just to clarify, this is on top of their BtB abilities? Or a replacement system?

I'm not sure what BtB means.
This is an option for the use of the class' built-in ability to cast spells that gives the magic-user, Elf, or Cleric a pool of energy to draw from in order to cast a spell. If the character has six mana points available, she can cast the same level 1 spell six times in a day.

BtB is By the Book. Can be used to refer to what is in the book as hengest does here or to a rigid play style that abhors house rules.

(Yeah, exactly, sorry I missed this, Ironnerd.)

So this is in alignment with the existing BtB abilities. It is basically a way to de-suck lower level magic types. I'm not sure yet if it makes much difference at higher XP levels.

Cool.

I've toyed with the idea of using some sort of mana points over the years, but I never could settle on a system that satisfied my tastes. I like the simple, elegant system you have put in place here. Well worth trying out and I'm going to do so.

My limited play-testing indicates that it works alright. So much better than a 1st level mage getting to cast a spell per day. Just one... then he has to go and hide. Oy!
